This futuristic graphic novel tale takes place in 2012 and there's a new World War. All of Europe is now one big superstate. Their leader is Jerome Rochelle, who let over 30 million people die. A rogue agent by the name of Anderton offers him first dibs on a secret weapon that will make his troops indestructible.
The main character of the story is Mary, who is the only surviving member of Anderton's military group, before he killed everyone else in it. And he killed Mary's parents. So when the U.S. government asks her to track him down before he can sell the weapon, she readily agrees. She gets the assistance of The Major, a British soldier who has some brain damage--he can't remember who he used to be, though he does his job flawlessly. However, Anderton ends up using his secret weapon on himself, which is a slug like creature that inhabits the body and acts like a biological supercharger, keeping the host body alive no matter what. This, of course, makes him very very difficult to stop. In their first fight she ends up burning him and he flees, to recuperate. The next time, though, she ends up ingesting one of the creatures herself, to put them on equal ground.
The second half of the book is about a crazy religious group that manages to take over New York City. Their leader is the Reverend Achilles Seagel and he wants to create a new population to run the Earth by impregnating every female follower he can. Again, Mary is recruited to stop him and get the city back. However, she wants her form of payment to be the repair of The Statue of Liberty, which now lies in a big crumbled pile on Ellis Island.
These two stories are entertaining and contain the usual Garth Ennis digs on religion and society.
