FVZA: Federal Vampire And Zombie Agency 1

The first issue of this three part series actually manages to make both types of monster interesting again, no small feat considering every other horror property out there either involves vampires or zombies.
It begins with a flashback story of two children, Landra and Vidal, who live with their grandfather since their parents were killed. Their grandfather used to run the FVZA, which was discontinued once all the monsters were believed eradicated in the mid-70's. He believes they are still out their, biding their time, and is training his grandchildren how to fight them. He teaches the kids about their history, how vampires came over with the settlers and zombies were battled during the Old West. It's a very interesting alternate history.
Then we go to the present. The vampires are indeed making a comeback--and they infect a town with the zombie virus. We're introduced to a group of vampire imitators who get more than they can chew when they meet up with a real vampire. Yet vampires aren't quite what they envision them to be...
FVZA is very well-written and detail oriented but it's the artwork that really conveys the viciousness of these monsters. If there's only one monster-themed comic book you pick up this year it should be this.
