This movie, directed by Edward James Olmos (Adama) is told from the perspective of the Cylons, beginning a day before their attack on the twelve colonies. It reveals how the "Final Five", who lived among the humans, survived the attack. The Cylons kept an eye on them. Cavil (Dean Stockwell) is very much the planner and the one determined to exterminate humanity. He convinces the other human looking Cylons to become kamikazees, exploding bombs on the fleet ships. He's the one who plans all of that sabotage that happens to the fleet. And he makes Boomer (Grace Park) do things, such as explode some water tanks and nearly shoot Adama to death. But why didn't she kill him? All of this is explained.
The movie shows the lives of some of the other Cylon models. One of them even married a human and can't bring himself to harm her. Rather than set an explosive he jettisons himself out of an airlock. He does this knowing he's out of range of any of the resurrection ships because he can't live with his predicament.
The majority of the movie centers on two different Cavils--one who is traveling with the fleet and another who is still on Caprica and is "rescued" by Anders and his group. In an interesting scene he tries to influence Anders, just as the other Cavil influenced Boomer, to kill Starbuck, but he misses. However, the Cavil in space is definitely evil. He even stabs a child to death without blinking. The Cavil on Caprica, who is eventually brought back with the other survivors, thinks humanity should be allowed to live.
This is "R" rated, like CAPRICA, as there's topless bartenders shown in one scene and also a shot of the communal showers on the Battlestar. The movie fills in gaps and answers questions you may have had about the series--and if you re-watch the television series THE PLAN will make you view it in a different way.
