When his girlfriend falls into a coma and is taken to the hospital, her boyfriend Art doesn't know what to do. He had shown up at her apartment that night and she was already unconscious, with a heroin needle next to her. But she's in a coma for being ill from living on the streets so many years. Since he's basically homeless he crashes at his friend Harvey's (Jim Byrnes) place. Harvey is a collector and one of the thing he recently collected is an old armchair that's covered in Christmas lights. Art sits down on this and remembers Harvey told him this is a time machine. It actually is.
So Art goes back in time, multiple times, to try to change Cody's past so she doesn't lapse in to that fatal coma. He goes back to pivotal times she had mentioned, like "when her brother screwed her up that Summer", which was when he committed suicide by blowing his brains out. It's both a funny and gruesome scene. He even goes back to a Christmas when she was in high school and sabotages her then boyfriend because he's jealous of him. When Art realizes that Cody's illness is basically his fault to begin with he has to do something drastic.
If you look at the listing for this movie on Imdb.com it's listed as a Romantic Comedy, but it's not. It's a drama with sci-fi overtones and darkly comic moments. It is also a very good time-travel movie.
